They\u2019re sold and printed (see Wikipedia\u2019s article about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Web_press#Web-fed_offset\">web-fed offset printing<\/a>) in giant rolls called \u201cweb rolls\u201d, and there is a heavy setup\/run cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, you do have a few great options if you want to print a short run magazine!&nbsp;<strong>Today we\u2019re going to talk about two of your options:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Buy 80 lb <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printivity.com\/insights\/80-lb-gloss-text-your-everyday-glossy-paper\">gloss text<\/a> at an office supply store to print at home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Print your magazines through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printivity.com\/insights\/whats-the-difference-between-offset-printing-versus-digital-printing\">digital printing<\/a> company\u2014like Printivity\u2014because they have access to thin gloss paper weights like 60 lb gloss text<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating booklets is not a fast process and will always be done correctly by professionals. However, you can try making booklets yourself if you are only planning on making a couple of books, and high-quality is not your biggest priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My goal is to do more than answer what kind of paper magazines are printed on. Both options will give your magazine a professional look, but one type might fit better for your project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.printivity.com\/booklets\/saddle-stitched-booklets\">Saddle Stitch Booklet Printing<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>These booklets are made by folding sheets of paper and using 2 staples to hold them together. This method means that your page count needs to be divisible by 4. Also, the minimum page count is 4 pages with a maximum of 64 pages. The staples allow for your magazine to be lightweight and have lay-flat capabilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perfect Bound <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printivity.com\/books\">Book Printing<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The pages to this binding type are cut to size and bound with glue to the covers of the book. This binding process creates a square spine that can allow for printing on the spine. The page count minimum in perfect bound books is 30 pages with a 400 page maximum. We recommend upgrading to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printivity.com\/books\/pur-perfect-bound-books\">PUR Perfect Bound<\/a> book with higher page count magazines due to the 40% stronger glue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a more descriptive explanation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printivity.com\/insights\/how-to-choose-the-best-booklet-binding\">book binding types<\/a> available, check out our infographic!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Printing on magazine paper at a digital printing company like Printivity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printivity.com\/insights\/how-long-does-it-take-to-print-a-magazine\">short run magazine printing<\/a>, you\u2019re going to go with 60 lb gloss text. It\u2019s a fantastic paper weight for making your magazine look like it was professionally made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you print your short run magazines at a digital printing company, you gain access to 60 lb gloss text.<\/strong> A few digital printing companies\u2014but not all\u2014carry 60 lb gloss text weight in stock. (Many printing companies store 80 lb gloss text as their thinnest paper type.) At Printivity, we call 60 lb gloss paper the \u201cultra thin gloss paper\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way\u2014when I refer to a \u201cdigital printing company\u201d, I\u2019m referring to printing companies that print on digital printing presses. Digital printing presses utilize computers and other digital technologies more heavily, and tend to be what short to mid-size runs are printed on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-horizontal is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-499968f5 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.printivity.com\/landing\/magazines\" style=\"background-color:#ef4129\">Get Instant Quotes &#8211; Custom Magazine Printing<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Also: it\u2019s not feasible to order a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printivity.com\/insights\/how-to-choose-the-best-paper-weight-for-your-print-job\">paper weight<\/a> like 60 lb gloss text and print it at home. 60 lb gloss text\u2014for digital printing\u2014is typically sold on pallets in very large (parent) sized sheets.
